Syndey, September 5, 2025 — In a decisive move that underscores its commitment to a multicultural future, the Australian federal government has announced it will maintain its annual permanent residence (PR) quota at 185,000 for the fiscal year 2025–26.
The announcement, made Tuesday by Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Tony burke, comes amid mounting pressure from nationwide campaigns calling for a reduction in immigration numbers, citing rising employment concerns and inflation. Despite these demands, the Labour-led government has opted to continue the Permanent migration Program at last year’s levels.
Minister burke confirmed that the decision followed extensive consultations with senior cabinet members, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. “Immigration remains a cornerstone of Australia’s development rhythm,” Work stated, emphasizing that the policy supports economic growth and reinforces the country’s multicultural identity.
The government also revealed that skilled workers—particularly those in the construction sector—will be prioritized in the PR allocation. Additionally, for the first time, quotas will be distributed across individual states and territories to better address regional workforce needs.
While the move has been welcomed by migrant communities, it marks a setback for groups advocating for stricter immigration controls. The government’s stance signals a strategic commitment to long-term national development, even as it navigates political pressure and economic challenges.
