Perth, 31 August 2025 — Perth has become the focal point of migration in Western Australia, driven by a surge in foreign student arrivals and interstate relocations since the federal government designated the city as part of a “regional” area in 2019.
The classification, which offers additional incentives for students and skilled migrants, has prompted many to move from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to Perth. The city’s appeal is further boosted by its open spaces, natural environment, and comparatively relaxed lifestyle.
According to the Department of Statistics, Western Australia recorded the nation’s fastest population growth over the past year, with 90,000 new permanent residents pushing the state’s population above 3 million — up from 2 million in 2005. The state’s annual growth rate now stands at 3.1 per cent, ahead of Victoria (2.7%), Queensland (2.5%), New South Wales (2%), the ACT (1.8%), South Australia (1.5%), and Tasmania (0.5%).
The rapid influx has intensified housing pressures in Perth and surrounding areas, with rental availability at historic lows and prices continuing to climb sharply.
