Kathmandu. After weeks of closure due to the Genji movement, movie theaters across Nepal are set to reopen starting Monday, signaling a cautious return to normalcy in the entertainment sector.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Film Association on Sunday, with a strong emphasis on ensuring the safety of both audiences and cinema halls. Of the 165 theaters nationwide, all except the QFX hall in Biratnagar—which was severely damaged by vandalism and arson—will resume operations.
Surendra Thapa, General Secretary and spokesperson for the union, stated that the reopening comes with strict conditions. Local security agencies will be notified prior to operations, and new safety protocols will be enforced.
Among the measures is a curfew on night screenings, with all halls required to close by 10 PM. “We are prioritizing public safety while reviving the film industry,” Thapa said. The reopening marks a significant step in Nepal’s recovery from recent unrest, offering a glimmer of hope for cultural life and economic activity.
