Kathmandu — The death toll from recent violent unrest has climbed to 72, according to Chief Secretary Eknarayan Aryal, who made the announcement during the inauguration of Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Sunday.

Aryal confirmed that among the deceased were 59 protesters, 10 prisoners, and three security personnel. In addition, 134 protesters and 57 police officers sustained injuries during the clashes.

The unrest traces back to a demonstration organized by the Jain community on Bhadra 23, demanding transparency in corruption investigations and greater freedom on social media platforms. The protest turned deadly, claiming 19 lives on the same day.

In response to the fatalities, widespread arson and vandalism erupted across the country on Bhadra 24, targeting government offices, police stations, Singhadwar, and even the Parliament House.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and investigate the causes behind the escalation. The new administration faces mounting pressure to restore order and address the protesters’ demands.
