Kathmandu, Nepal — In a historic turn of events, former Supreme Court Justice Sushila Karki has been sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal’s newly formed interim government. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by President Ram Chandra Poudel during a formal ceremony held Friday evening.

Following her appointment, Prime Minister Karki recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives, a move swiftly enacted by President Poudel. According to an official statement from the President’s Office, the dissolution took effect at 11 p.m. on Bhadra 27.

📅 Election Date Announced In a bid to restore democratic order, the government has announced that new elections for the House of Representatives will be held on Thursday, Falgun 21.

⚠️ Aftermath of the Genji Movement The political transition comes in the wake of the devastating Genji movement that swept across the country on Bhadra 23 and 24. The unrest claimed the lives of more than 50 individuals and led to widespread destruction of key government infrastructure, including the Singha Durbar, Supreme Court, Parliament House, and the presidential residence, Sital Niwas.

The interim government now faces the dual challenge of stabilizing the nation and preparing for the upcoming elections amid a backdrop of grief and reconstruction.
