Melbourne, Australia — The Newar community in Melbourne marked a historic cultural milestone on Saturday with the first-ever celebration of the Indra Jatra festival at the Nepali Multicultural Centre. The event brought the spirit of Kathmandu’s iconic street festival to Australian soil, dazzling attendees with traditional performances and vibrant displays.

A specially crafted virgin chariot was paraded through the venue, symbolizing the ceremonial heart of the festival. Towering at six feet, a striking white Bhairav statue stood as a centerpiece, accompanied by energetic performances from Lakhe, Pulu Kisi, and the rhythmic beats of Dhime Bajagaja drums. These traditional dances and musical acts captivated the crowd, many of whom were experiencing the festival for the first time.

The celebration drew a large and diverse audience from across Melbourne, reflecting both cultural pride and growing interest in Nepalese heritage. Organizers hailed the event as a bridge between generations and communities, bringing a piece of Nepal’s rich traditions to the multicultural tapestry of Australia.
