Sydney, 31 August 2025 — Large-scale demonstrations were held across Australia on Sunday under the banner March for Australia, as participants voiced concerns over rising inflation, limited job opportunities, and escalating housing costs.
Protesters assembled in the market districts of major cities — including Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and Hobart — carrying Australian flags and calling on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government to review immigration policy.
While the majority of gatherings proceeded peacefully, isolated incidents of unrest were reported. In Melbourne, tensions escalated during a confrontation with a group of Palestinian supporters, amid ongoing conflict in Gaza that has resulted in tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths. In Brisbane’s central business district and in Hobart, scuffles occurred between demonstrators and police. New South Wales Police confirmed the arrest of one individual in Sydney.
Both the governing Labor Party and the opposition Liberal Party condemned the protests, emphasizing the significant economic and cultural contributions of immigrants and reaffirming their commitment to equal treatment for all citizens.
Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Tony Work, in a statement issued ahead of the rallies, cautioned that such demonstrations risk undermining social cohesion. He reiterated that the government would not tolerate discrimination.
Despite calls from protesters to reduce immigration, the federal government has announced plans to increase the annual intake of foreign students, setting a target of 2,95,000 by 2026.The March for Australia is part of a series of Sunday demonstrations that have taken place in multiple cities in recent weeks, with organizers indicating their intention to continue the campaign.
