Sydney, Australia – August 30, 2025

In a move that could transform travel for thousands of Nepalese students and families, Sichuan Airlines has applied for permission to operate flights between Pokhara, Nepal and Australia via Chengdu, China. The announcement has sparked excitement among the Nepalese diaspora in Australia, which now exceeds 300,000 people—many of whom are international students.

According to Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAN), the airline is in the final stages of securing approval to launch the route from Pokhara International Airport. CAAN spokesperson Gyanendra Bhol confirmed that the necessary procedures are underway.

“Sichuan Airlines has sought permission to fly to Australia via Chengdu, and we are working through the required steps to facilitate this,” Bhol stated.

A Game-Changer for Nepali Diaspora

Australia remains one of the top education destinations for Nepali students, with tens of thousands enrolled in universities and vocational institutions across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and beyond. For many, the journey home involves multiple layovers and long transits through Kathmandu or other hubs.

The new route offers a more direct and emotionally meaningful option: flying from Pokhara, a city close to home for many students, straight to Australia.

“This could make a huge difference for students like me,” said Prativa K.C., a nursing student in Sydney. “It’s not just about convenience—it’s about feeling connected to home.”
